The Human (BCO2) Beta, Beta-Carotene 9', 10'-Oxygenase ELISA Kit measures beta,beta-carotene 9',10'-oxygenase in samples. The plate has been pre-coated with Human BCO2 antibody. BCO2 present in the sample is added and binds to antibodies coated on the wells. And then biotinylated Human BCO2 Antibody is added and binds to BCO2 in the sample. Then Streptavidin-HRP is added and binds to the Biotinylated BCO2 antibody. After incubation unbound Streptavidin-HRP is washed away during a washing step. Substrate solution is then added and color develops in proportion to the amount of Human BCO2. The reaction is terminated by addition of acidic stop solution and absorbance is measured at 450 nm.

Background
Asymmetrically cleaves beta-carotene at the 9',10' double bond resulting in the formation of beta-apo-10'-carotenal and beta-ionone. Besides beta-carotene, lycopene is also oxidatively cleaved. The apocarotenals formed by this enzyme may be the precursors for the biosynthesis of retinoic acid or exert unknown physiological effects. Source: UniProt Consortium (2025)
