The Rat (DEFA5) Defensin-5 ELISA Kit measures defensin-5 in Rat samples. The plate has been pre-coated with Rat DEFA5 antibody. DEFA5 present in the sample is added and binds to antibodies coated on the wells. And then biotinylated Rat DEFA5 Antibody is added and binds to DEFA5 in the sample. Then Streptavidin-HRP is added and binds to the Biotinylated DEFA5 antibody. After incubation unbound Streptavidin-HRP is washed away during a washing step. Substrate solution is then added and color develops in proportion to the amount of Rat DEFA5. The reaction is terminated by addition of acidic stop solution and absorbance is measured at 450 nm.

Background
Defensin, alpha 5 (DEFA5) also known as human alpha defensin 5 (HD5) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the DEFA5 gene. DEFA5 is expressed in the Paneth cells of the ileum. Defensins are a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides (antimicrobial peptides; AMP) that are involved in host defense, and help to maintain homeostasis of intestinal microbiota. DEFA5 is the main AMP that controls the enteric microbiota composition by selective killing of bacterial pathogens while preserving commensals. Source: UniProt Consortium (2025)
