The Rat (NRCAM) Neuronal Cell Adhesion Molecule ELISA Kit measures Neuronal cell adhesion molecule in Rat samples. The plate has been pre-coated with Rat NRCAM antibody. NRCAM present in the sample is added and binds to antibodies coated on the wells. And then biotinylated Rat NRCAM Antibody is added and binds to NRCAM in the sample. Then Streptavidin-HRP is added and binds to the Biotinylated NRCAM antibody. After incubation unbound Streptavidin-HRP is washed away during a washing step. Substrate solution is then added and color develops in proportion to the amount of Rat NRCAM. The reaction is terminated by addition of acidic stop solution and absorbance is measured at 450 nm.

Background
Cell adhesion protein that is required for normal responses to cell-cell contacts in brain and in the peripheral nervous system. Plays a role in neurite outgrowth in response to contactin binding. Plays a role in mediating cell-cell contacts between Schwann cells and axons (By similarity).
Plays a role in the formation and maintenance of the nodes of Ranvier on myelinated axons (PubMed:16039564).
Nodes of Ranvier contain clustered sodium channels that are crucial for the saltatory propagation of action potentials along myelinated axons. During development, nodes of Ranvier are formed by the fusion of two heminodes. Required for normal clustering of sodium channels at heminodes; not required for the formation of mature nodes with normal sodium channel clusters.
